Lens Thickness
The refractive index of a lens determines how thin it can be made — higher index means thinner lenses for the same prescription power. Compare all six materials to find the right one for your Rx.
1.50 — CR-39 Standard
Best for: Up to ±2.00
The industry-standard lens material. Best value, most widely compatible. The baseline for thickness comparisons.
1.55 — Polycarbonate Lite
Best for: Up to ±3.00
A small step thinner than CR-39 at a modest price increase. Good for low prescriptions wanting slightly slimmer lenses.
1.59 — Polycarbonate
Best for: Up to ±4.00
10× more impact-resistant than CR-39. Required for children, safety eyewear, and rimless frames. Naturally thinner and lighter.
1.60 — High-Index
Best for: Up to ±6.00
Significantly thinner and lighter than CR-39. The most popular choice for moderate to high prescriptions.
1.67 — High-Index
Best for: Up to ±8.00
45% thinner than standard CR-39. Recommended for prescriptions above ±5.00 sphere or strong astigmatism.
1.74 — Ultra High-Index
Best for: ±8.00 and above
The thinnest lens material available anywhere. For the strongest prescriptions where any lower index would be unacceptably thick.
