Transitions Photochromic Lenses
Transitions lenses automatically darken outdoors and return to clear indoors. Three designs: Original (everyday), Xtractive (extra-dark + activates in cars), Vantage (polarized when dark).
How Transitions Work
Transitions lenses contain photochromic molecules that react to ultraviolet (UV) light. Outdoors in UV light, the molecules change their chemical structure and absorb visible light — darkening the lens. Indoors away from UV, they return to their original clear state.
Transition Time
- Darkening time: Approximately 30 seconds to reach 60% of full darkness; fully dark in 1–2 minutes.
- Clearing time: 3–5 minutes from dark to mostly clear; fully clear in about 20 minutes.
The Three Transitions Designs
Transitions Original — $64.95
The classic Transitions. Clear indoors, dark outdoors. Suitable for most prescription wearers who want convenience without carrying separate sunglasses for everyday activities.
Transitions Xtractive — $94.95
Designed to activate behind car glass (which blocks UV). Slightly tinted indoors (reduces screen glare), darker outdoors than Original, and partially activates through windshields. Ideal for drivers.
Transitions Vantage — $164.95
The most advanced Transitions design. Clear indoors, and outdoors it darkens AND polarizes — providing glare elimination similar to dedicated polarized sunglasses when the lens is activated. Unique among photochromic lenses.
Temperature Effect
Photochromic lenses respond more quickly and reach a darker state in cold temperatures. In hot weather (above 25°C/77°F), they are somewhat slower to darken and may not reach maximum darkness.
